What the hell was the runner doing
What the hell was the runner doing
Hepps mentioned on the Footy Show last night that during the movement that got the ball to Dempsey the backline was aware there was only about 10 seconds left.
What the frick was the runner doing going out there telling the backline how long was left, instead of the midfield/forward line players. Seriously if Hooker took a mark in the defensive goalsquare it really doesn't make any difference if he knows there is only 10 seconds left or not.

Re: What the hell was the runner doing
There are two runners per team these days (I think) so the other one was quite possibly running around the forward line/midfield.
It was just one of those things....there was nothing a runner could have done to change the result.

Are we dumb or what. Unless there is a rule that stops you from doing this, why don't you just have someone on the interchange bench hold up a yellow flag when there are 2 minutes remaining a white flag when there is 1 min remaining and a red flag when there are 30 secs remaining. Then every player can simply look to the one spot for a clear understanding of the time left. No need to play Chinese Whispers with the Runners
Re: What the hell was the runner doing
And if you can't do it from the bench, sit someone up in the Medallion Club, where there are tvs with the game clock, to do the same thing. There's got to be a way.Windy_Hill wrote:Are we dumb or what. Re: What the hell was the runner doing
Way too simplistic an approach...it was a split second decision by Dempsey based on playing to the game plan and instinctively knowing that time was short.
We can second guess this till the cows come home but it won't change anything.
At that stage of the game, players need to be concentrating on the ball and not worrying about semaphore signals from the bench or elsewhere.

Give me a farken spell..
Re: What the hell was the runner doing
Yep. In this case, even if it was a good idea, Dempsey having seen a flag that told him there were 10 seconds left would have only encouraged him to play on immediately and try and get close enough to make the distance.bomberdonnie wrote:Agreedswoodley wrote:Way too simplistic an approach...it was a split second decision by Dempsey based on playing to the game plan and instinctively knowing that time was short.

Re: What the hell was the runner doing
Only 1 runner can be on the ground.
When Barnes was runner he used to put a red hat on when there was 2 minutes to go and the AFL banned that so there is no way they will let us have a flag.
Remember that with 10 seconds to go the ball was in our back line so if the runner didn't tell the backline there is a good possibility that the ball would have been on the back flank when the siren went as they wouldn't have known to move it that quickly.

Why don't you two sit in the Medallion Club and flash your tits to let the boys know how long there is to go? Maybe both tits for 2 minutes, and one tit for a minute?Ossie wrote:And if you can't do it from the bench, sit someone up in the Medallion Club, where there are tvs with the game clock, to do the same thing. Re: What the hell was the runner doing
We needed some Jedi knights on the bench who could use the Jedi mind trick and suggest to Dempsey " go back and take your kick, don't play on"
They would have then used the Force to make the ball go the distance and result in a goal after the siren to win the game.
Alternatively they could have used the Jedi mind trick on the ump: "Dempsey did not play on, go back and take your kick"

Thanks Umpire Bonce...I was pretty sure that there were two of them but didn't know that only one was allowed on at a time.boncer34 wrote:One on the ground at a time mate.swoodley wrote:There are two runners per team these days (I think) so the other one was quite possibly running around the forward line/midfield.

who knows the crowd might have been screaming to GO GO GO! but i can't imagine he would have heard anything in the crowd no matter how loud it was
bottom line is i don't blame Dempsey for the loss, but if you know there is only a handful of seconds left you never play on, he wont do that again anytime soon

Gawd ... this is the ultimate what-if thread...
Simply put ... we didn't deserve to win, and if we had - the poor attitude and application and hubris that has crept in of late wouldn't be the focus of the team ... I can imagine ... "hey we're good, we just broke the record for the biggest last quarter turnaround to win the game" ... pshwar!
Suck it in princesses - you lost it ... now deal with it and make sure it dont happen again!!!

You never play on if you are within kicking distance - Demps can barely kick over a Jam tin he's had that many leg injuries, he knew he wasnt within his kicking range.
By the way, I thought he was fantastic in that last quarter
