Some of that is right, and some of it is revisionism.

The War on Drugs was underway well before Reagan - LBJ was strongly anti-drugs, as was Nixon, as it was a politically popular way to victimize the hippies and counter-cultural revolution that started in the mid-to-late 1960s. Being hard on drugs enjoyed mostly bipartisan support from both Democrats and Republicans until Carter came along, and then obviously Reagan picked up where LBJ and Nixon had left things.

Sandinistas came to power in Nicaragua in 1979, before Reagan, and partly due to Carter pulling the plug on the previous Somoza regime. Zero sum game, anyway - the country just swapped a fascist crook for a socialist crook, and that socialist crook (Ortega) is still in power today. My girlfriend is Nicaraguan so i feel like i'm pretty well up-to-speed on this one. With all these tinpot countries, my general view is it's almost moot to discuss who did what and when - they never have the institutions to hold any sort of leader to account (left or right wing), so it's almost by default a choice between a corrupt fascist leader and a corrupt socialist - choose your poison.

Pinochet was installed with the help of the Nixon administration, not Reagan. Pinochet committed horrendous human rights atrocities, but helped pull Chile out of the socialist-created economic hellhole it was, so i give him some credit.

I've lived in the US for over 3 years. The most fascinating part about the US is the fact it's functioned as well it has, under a democratic system, for roughly 250 years, given (or perhaps, in spite of) the diversity within the country. Rural Texas, for example, is about as comparable to NYC or San Fran, as Berlin is to Myanmar.

It's really not that different to, say, the comparison between those who live in inner city Melbourne or Sydney, versus those who live in rural Queensland. It's largely the composition of our population that gives Australia the veneer of being much more unified and centrist - luckily for us, we have a larger percentage of the population that lives in the major cities (basically half our entire population is in Melbourne or Sydney, combined). The US would be a very different place if half its residents lived in San Fran and New York.
