Re: WHAT IS THIS YES/NO VOTE ABOUT?
As I have said...I don't care about this shit.
The only caveat I have is that those opposed have the right to not perform ceremony and the couple has to find a celebrant that will do it.

No.Just point me in the direction of a convincing arguement to vote Yes and I'll seriously consider it.
Just earn my vote. The Republicans Failed me in '99 so I put the thing on the Backburner and Voted No.
That'll come eventually if they don't bugger it up again.
Just hope the Yes Campaign doesn't rue an opportunity lost.

Republican Vote (Which was sabotaged by Howard) was a change to the constitution.grassy1 wrote: ↑Fri Sep 22, 2017 1:21 amNo.Just point me in the direction of a convincing arguement to vote Yes and I'll seriously consider it.

This is a change to the law that Howard introduced that defined marriage as the "voluntarily entered-into union of a man and a woman to exclusion of all others"
Good reasons to vote yes: Equality under the law.
Why don't you find me a good reason to vote no?
Re: WHAT IS THIS YES/NO VOTE ABOUT?
You're putting words in my mouth buddy.I haven't decided yet.
Howard may have sabotaged the Vote for the Republic, but the Republicans still made a mess of it.Because of that, people weren't ready to make such a change.
The Assault on Abbott won't influence my vote one way or another, but whoever did it,clearly wasn't thinking about the damage it would do his cause.Such an act of Lunacy(even if Abbott really is a 1st Class C***)can cost serious votes.
On the flip side,Apparently Rudd's Son was assaulted worse than Abbott, which might swing voters the other way.But because of Abbott's profile, much of the negativity will hurt the Yes Camp.
Unfortunately, the Assault on Abbott might do the Yes folk irreperable damage.Silly things like that can determine votes, like it or not.
By the way,how long have we got?

Re: WHAT IS THIS YES/NO VOTE ABOUT?
I voted yes as I don't think people should be treated as 2nd class citizens because of who they fall in love with.

Re: WHAT IS THIS YES/NO VOTE ABOUT?
I didn't bother returning it because "frankly my dear I don't give a damn"
Re: WHAT IS THIS YES/NO VOTE ABOUT?
The PM made a law to specifically exclude them from publically celebrating their relationships. I'd suggest that creates 2 classes.tonysoprano wrote: ↑Tue Sep 26, 2017 10:57 pm
I voted yes. But are they treated as 2nd class citizens?
Re: WHAT IS THIS YES/NO VOTE ABOUT?
If you are excluded on the basis of who you fall in love with then I'd argue that you are treated as a 2nd class citizen.tonysoprano wrote: ↑Tue Sep 26, 2017 10:57 pm

I see. Please outline any "convincing arguments" the 'no' campaign made to "earn" your vote.grassy1 wrote: ↑Fri Sep 22, 2017 1:21 amNo.Just point me in the direction of a convincing arguement to vote Yes and I'll seriously consider it.

Re: WHAT IS THIS YES/NO VOTE ABOUT?
Since I've become a celebrant, I've conducted ceremonies for two of my family members and several of my friends. Occasions of great happiness, watching two people who have met, fallen in love, and want to spend the rest of their lives together, standing in front of their families and friends, and be legally married.grassy1 wrote: ↑Fri Sep 22, 2017 1:21 amNo.Just point me in the direction of a convincing arguement to vote Yes and I'll seriously consider it.

Yet there was also a tinge of sadness, as other friends and family members, who were there at the ceremonies, don't have that same privilege. They've met someone, fallen in love, want to spend the rest of their lives together, and they would love the opportunity to stand in front of their families and friends, and be legally married as well.
But at the moment they can't.
I remember growing up, dreaming about what my wedding day might be like. I know many other people who did (and still do!) the same. It can be one of the most amazing, wonderful and important days of your life. And I have the choice for that to occur, should the circumstances happen. But at the moment, many of my family and friends don't.
So it may be an issue that doesn't affect you directly. But please think about those people in your lives that it can make a HUGE difference for.
Re: WHAT IS THIS YES/NO VOTE ABOUT?
Thanks for your post Koala.
Pretty compelling stuff.
Better go and find my postal vote, stuck in the deep abyss of my work bag.

Well,I posted my vote last week.believing the deadline was 6PM Perth Time,Friday.

So when does voting actually finish here?

Re: WHAT IS THIS YES/NO VOTE ABOUT?
And the Yes vote has smashed it.
Essendon Football Club- We arent arrogant, just deluded.
Re: WHAT IS THIS YES/NO VOTE ABOUT?
It was an Essendon v Norf 2000 Qualifying final like smashing.
Some bizarre voting patterns if you look at the electorate by electorate. The electorate that I'm in (Holt) is a safe ALP seat and the result was 50.7% to 49.3% in favour.
Flinders is my old electorate and is a sale Lib seat and it was 70% to 30% in favour.
I'm happy that Australia voted Yes.

Re: WHAT IS THIS YES/NO VOTE ABOUT?
Congratulations to all, the YES vote killed it. And;this is where the gay community kick start the Australian economy with splash and style and marriages will be happening everywhere.
Anyone who had a bit of a sense or an eye for Real Estate who followed the gay community out of Windsor/Prahran to Daylesford and then up to the Yarra Valley, could have made an absolute killing in the Real Estate market. I have a friends who did.
