4th Best Defence - 10th Best Attack

Post by Windy_Hill » Mon Jun 17, 2019 7:11 pm

This is a glaring problem that needs to be addressed. Without Daniher we simply struggle to score goals. Walla and Fantasia are hot, cold or injured. Only two teams have scored more than 100 pats against us this season and one of those games (vs Melbourne) we won.

What is the best forward line up for the remainder of the season? Where will goals come from or is the improving midfield and half back rebound going to be enough?

Smack needs some tall help, be that Brown or Stewart. Laverde has been ok, but would've been very good with straight kicking.
We also seem to kick it to Walla too much. Unless it's a dart to a clear leading chest mark, it's often fruitless. Get the smalls at the drop of the ball, not inside the jumping pack.

I'd take it one step further.....all our forwards need to be leading....to different spaces.
We don't have any genuine pack mark beasts. So if we don't have a setup like Richmond with just one tall and a bunch of crumbers (and we don't have that setup), then we need to be a setup where everyone is a target. Then it depends on delivery, and the ability of each forward to win their own ball.

Here's an idea, howz about a couple of our prolific ball winning midfielders start kicking goals? Heppell, Zach Merrett and Shiel have kicked a total of 8 goals from a total of 973 disposals.

Compare that to the Cats who have Tim Kelly, Mitch Duncan and Patrick Dangerfield kicking 20 goals from 920 disposals.

Pies have Treloar, Pendlebury and Sidebottom kicking 17 goals from 1029 disposals.

GWS have Cogniglio, Kelly and Whitfield kicking 22 goals from 898 disposals.

Crows have B. Crouch, M. Crouch and Sloane kicking 21 goals from 1058 disposals.

Eagles have Sheed, Gaff and Shuey kicking 16 goals from 967 disposals.

Even the bottom side Carlton has Cripps, Walsh and Fisher kicking 18 goals from 941 disposals.

Yep. Gets back to kicking straight doesn't it. #-o Shiel and Heppell have both missed goals they shouldn't. Merrett seems to nail them given the opportunity? I wonder how their accuracy stats hold up against the others? If they're having the same opportunity but aren't straight enough then, just like Laverde's recent form, it could be great, but it just isn't quite.

When our goal kicking improves and it must if we are to move up the ladder and stay there. Our skills have been letting us down big time.
If we can start kicking what we've been missing we will move up the ladder quickly and will be harder to compete against.
Nothing usually happens until something happens.

Daniher being out improves our goal kicking efficiency by at least 20% per game...

I love the guy as a personality, but seriously question how highly rated he is given the evidence so far.

And those pointing to 2017, that is an outlier in his career thus far...

But the difference is narrowing! - glass half full :)
Shows how stats don't always mean a lot. Defence = worse, Attack = worse, but we're higher on the ladder!

Yes, I was more highlighting the top 3 midfielders from these teams. I could throw in Gary Ablett just for fun and the Cats would have 70 goals from 1427 disposals.

Ouch!
Suppose it depends whether you want to define the top 3 midfielders or the top goalkicking midfielders.
Like I said in a couple of different places tonight - stats can say different things and teams have different ways of achieving the same ends.
