Yep, good times. Hopefully someone of some value becomes available and we can snag them, although i remain cynical.
There's a thread about Cain Ackland over in the 'serious stuff' section (even though it probably should've been here in the drafts thread in the first place):

Re: Thanks Carlton
That's great news. Means we can go hard at any uncontracted player. Tim Notting hasn't signed yet and would look good in Red and Black.dodgey wrote:for taking Cain Ackland as your #1 pick in the pre-season draft

Anyone no who else is out of contract.
HA HA HA HA
Carlton fast becoming the laughing stock of the competition.
Sure they need a ruckman but haven't they figured out they're not able to recruit one. Let's look at their recent history of poaching ruckman.
Barnaby French- serviceable at best
Dylan McLaren- uber hack (can't believe some people on here wanted us to recruit him last year)
and now Cain Ackland
Hell St Kilda are in desparate need of a hlf decent ruckman and they still refused to give this guy a game at the end of the year!!!
And they've picked him up on a 3 YEAR contract as well.
I've just become a whole lot more confident about us not getting the wooden spoon in 2007!!!
The only downside is that it appears that this is a move that indicates they won't take Matthew Luenberger with the number 1 draft pick, which unfortunatley looks like it will mean that Bryce Gibbs want get through to us at pick 2.

It certainly seems that way now, the Blues will have McLaren, DeLuca, Bryan and Ackland to shoulder the ruck duties... it seems a sure thing now that they will take Bryce Gibbs in a few weeks at the draft.ealesy wrote:

Seems to me that Carlton are going with a Captain Planet theory with their ruck stocks.Mrs Mercuri wrote:

there are PLENTY of players Out of contract around..... They just are still in negotiations. Ackland was a "required" player at the Aint's and was offered a 2yr deal.
He decided to take the 3yr deal and avoid playing behind Gardiner.
we'd be derelict in our duty if we DIDN'T contact the managers of every decent player who isn't currently under contract for next year.
it also says to McPhee...." If you walk out we can just pick you up again, so you may as well just sign anyway" just like Carlton did to Thornton

Definately not the sort of working relationship you would want with any member of the team. McPhee should be offered 3 years and plenty of cash as he is certainly one of our best players when fully fit.
yeah the problem with that is that he hasn't been able to get fully fit the past two seasons.Western Red wrote:dodgey wrote:there are PLENTY of players Out of contract around..... They just are still in negotiations. Ackland was a "required" player at the Aint's and was offered a 2yr deal.

Only really the elite players of the comp get 3 year deals these days, (and hacks that clubs over-committ to get/keep at a club eg Ackland) pretty much the only Essendon player who would currently get a 3 year deal is Lloydy, and maybe not even him after his injury.
But we will not be giving a player who has injury problems the past two seasons and not been able to get anywhere near his best form a 3 year deal.
isn't it the case that any player in the PSD can set conditions on his drafting? eg how many $$$ he wants.dodgey wrote:there are PLENTY of players Out of contract around..... They just are still in negotiations. Ackland was a "required" player at the Aint's and was offered a 2yr deal.

notting would be awesome if he is moving from brisbane.
welsh,fletcher,m. johnson
notting,mcphee, <hansen/gumbleton?>
would be a nice back line I reckon.....
Rubbish. Then why was Lucas only given two. McPhee should take the two years and get on with it. If he is holding out for a 3 year deal then that is pathetic.Western Red wrote:dodgey wrote:there are PLENTY of players Out of contract around..... They just are still in negotiations. What this really says is Carlton don't believe McPhee will walk, and that there is nobody decent available for the PSD. Which is something I agree with.

If the reigning Crichton Medallist CAN'T get a 3yr deal then Adam McPhee certainly doesn't deserve oneWestern Red wrote:dodgey wrote:there are PLENTY of players Out of contract around..... They just are still in negotiations. Ackland was a "required" player at the Aint's and was offered a 2yr deal.

What have you heard K has he signed and if so for how long???Koala wrote:don't worry about McPhee. He's not going anywhere.
Can't understand why there are so mnay on here who beleive he is not worth signing for 3 years. If Lucas didn't get 3 years he needs a new manager!!!!!! Thats not McPhees problem.
Lucas wanted three years, but Essendon has a policy of giving out 3 year deals. It got us into a lot of trouble a while back, so its only 2 year deals for us, except the captain. Lucas showed loyalty there, time for McPhee to step up to the plate and take the two year deal, considering the past two years he has had.Western Red wrote:What have you heard K has he signed and if so for how long???Koala wrote:don't worry about McPhee.
