Is Hird overseeing...
...the worst period in the club's history?
Like sand through the hour glass, so are the days at the Essendon Football Club.

Re: Is Hird overseeing...
Not on his own...began under Sheeds when the 2000 team was dismantled, Knights was part of it too...
For me, the biggest concerns are:
Recruiting players like C.Johns, J.Laycock & S.Gumbleton - permanently injured, yet remain on the list for 6+ years each
Recycled players like Cupido, Allen & Camporeale - in the twighlight of their playing careers when we were never a realistic chance to win the flag (I put Chapman, Goddard and Cooney in this bracket)
Development of players - how often has a young kid earnt a game and got their spot through injury only to be dropped the following week for a returning 'superstar'? If a kid earns his game, give him a decent crack - minimum 4 games. Sure, drop someone else to get a quality player back, but give the kids a decent crack at it...
All these things happened under Sheeds and Knights as much as Hird.
I know others have touched on it (not in here so much), but I am beginning to think there may be a touch of loyalty factor by gifting games to players out of form...
Time to bite the bullet and make some ballsy moves by dumping at least 5 players and putting the whole roster on notice...

100% Agree
Re: Is Hird overseeing...
The signs are ominous that he is.
Once the older guys are gone (soon), there's some gaping holes, with not much obvious talent to replace them.
Agreed re giving kids a go.
But the recruitment issues (injuries, recycling) are irrelevant to me .
The talent IS there. Or was. We were highly competitive/rated for most of the last 3 years (especially until the latter end of the seasons).
So what's gone wrong?
In my view it's either ASADA or Hird, or both. I find it hard to blame ASADA given the performances they've shown during the previous 2 seasons at the height of all the drama. But hey, I'm not mixed up in it like the players are, and maybe it is THAT big of a deal.

that was already locked in with the supplement fiasco.gringo wrote:...the worst period in the club's history?
re: results and the state of the list, I don't think its in that bad a shape. we got good kids, some great talls and we have been managing the mid 2000s recruiting gap reasonably well with free agents.

If we don't make the GF next year we will equal the club's longest GF drought.
We haven't won a final in more than a decade
We have and are still going through the club's most damaging off field saga...nay, the competition's most damaging saga.
Our team is bereft of confidence and possibly talent
Yep, Hird is skippering the Titanic

Dad and I were just chatting about the state of play and the increasingly evident fact is that Jim can't coach.
The 2's never stop running and are killing it.
The 1's basically stand still. Go figure. Same Club!!
We remember a time just after Watson the Elder gave up the St Kilda gig after 2 years realising he wasn't meant to be a coach. He was on the radio with T. Shaw who had just left the Pies with similar "success" to Tim after 4 years.
Story goes with the banter is Tim saying at least "I realised I couldn't coach after 2 years...you took 4".....Shawy pissed himself laughing.
As we are seeing now it seems, a champion player a coach doth not make....sometimes.

Or is the EFC the Titanic? Through this drama it seemed that Hird was the rudder.
Nothing usually happens until something happens.

We aren't making a GF next year so we can consider that record broken.
